Catch Me Posting Something Good

Sterigenics focuses on long-term partnerships with our customers. By thoroughly understanding our customer’s needs, we deliver the most appropriate and cost effective solutions. We are also committed to making our facilities safe and engaging places to work.

To promote both of these goals, we are happy to announce a social media campaign dedicated to honoring our customers and employees. We are going to post some results from our 2013 customer survey and snippets of an internal memo that we circulate, titled “Catch Someone Doing Something Right.”

The customer survey will be used to promote relationships with customers and clients and hopefully address some of their concerns. We will take some of the individual questions and break down your answers into microposts across Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

The “Catch” memoranda document instances where someone in our company has made the business of being in business a little easier. For instance; if an employee at our Smyrna plant rushes a customer’s order and is given feedback on the exchange, we may tweet that. For the purposes of protecting our employees, no one’s name will be used (unless, of course, you contact us and wish to be indentified).

So, follow us here, on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ to stay up to date with what people are saying about Sterigenics and the wonderful people who make it work.

Staying Safe from Counterfeit Cosmetics

Cosmetics

With the rise of online shopping, counterfeiters in the cosmetic industry have been able to expand their customer base, including selling fake cosmetics. The FBI has recently issued a warning about counterfeit cosmetics and fragrances increasingly coming into the United States.  Although it may initially seem like a bargain to consumers, counterfeit cosmetics can pose a serious health risk.  Industry studies and tests have revealed that fake cosmetics often contain dangerous ingredients such as arsenic, beryllium, and cadmium as well as unsafe levels of bacteria.  Many counterfeiters also are dealing cosmetics that have not been manufactured with solid GMP’s and FDA guidelines.

To ensure that consumers are getting authentic cosmetics, they should always buy from authorized retailers and avoid purchasing cosmetics at flea markets, street vendors, individuals, mall kiosks, or online auction sites. Other indicators of fake cosmetics include:

  • Packaging that differs slightly from the authentic brand
  • The product is advertised as limited-edition even though the authentic manufacturer doesn’t offer it as a limited edition
  • The price is lower than its normal cost
  • The cosmetics’ consistency or texture doesn’t look or feel like the authentic brand

If you suspect the product is counterfeit, don’t purchase it. To learn more about our cosmetics sterilization services, visit our website.

The FDA Addresses Pet Food Safety

The Food and Drug Administration is proposing a new ruling to improve pet treats and pet food safety. The FDA has not previously had regulations for this industry. In recent years there have been reported incidences and recalls, in which the contamination caused illness and deaths in pets. Consumers have demanded the FDA to take action. The proposed ruling requires that pet and animal food manufacturers have procedures in place to prevent food-borne illnesses.

At Sterigenics International, Inc., animal treats and pet food are sterilized with gamma irradiation as an extra kill step after the manufacturing processing. In addition to finished goods, Sterigenics also treats packaging to ensure consumer safety. Stronger regulation will require the manufacturing facilities to test and detect salmonella and other contaminates. This ruling will reduce the chance of contaminated pet food entering the United States.

Natural and meat products have a higher risk for salmonella and bacteria. These enhanced precautionary actions will become more routine for manufacturers. The FDA’s proposal will expand these actions throughout the pet food and animal feed industries to help protect pets and livestock. The proposed ruling will also help protect humans. Pet owners often handle pet food and treats contaminated with salmonella which can spread harmful bacteria and illness to consumers.

Imported Cosmetics – Cost and Quality

It is safe to say that all nationally known and well respected personal care product companies strive to insure that their cosmetics are clean and safe.  It is important for them to package their products responsibly and attractively while also keeping an eye on their budget.

Many companies look overseas (mainly to China) to order and import products. While this may seem to be trending, some of the raw materials and components test positive for bacterial and harmful metals. It is also common for visible mold to grow during transportation.

When testing for distribution, a failed test due to any of the aforementioned problems can lead to missed deadlines, let alone panic and the screeching halt of promotions and campaigns. As we head into the final few months of the year, the importance of getting things out in time for the holiday season is paramount.

Safe and effective solutions Sterigenics offers are ETO gas and gamma irradiation. Many health and beauty products can safely be irradiated, which will reduce the micro counts and eliminate the molds and yeasts that are harmful. Products such as mascara, face creams and packaging are routinely received at Sterigenics’ locations.  Within a few days time, your products can be restored for safe distribution.

How Sterilization Keeps Consumers Safe

Without ever having to think about it, American consumers are kept safe and healthy because of sterilization. These sterilization solutions keep patients in hospitals healthy, protects over the counter and prescribed medications,  and make cosmetics safe for use.  Likewise, one of the industries that utilize our sterilization services—on which millions of lives are affected by—is the food industry.

So what exactly are the sterilization services offered to our food and commercial industry customers?  Here are just a few  examples:

  • Spices: When many types of spices such as garlic powder, black pepper, etc.— are imported into the country, they must be sterilized to properly kill any bacteria  or other harmful agents.  We send them through the sterilization process, which kills and reduces microbial counts.
  • Walnut shells and cornmeal (used for cosmetics):  Natural products such as this contain bacteria and pathogens and must be sterilized before being used in cosmetics production.
  • Pet Treats:  Dog bones and natural food ingredients contain salmonella. While this is harmless to the dogs themselves, the humans who are handling them need to be kept safe. Through sterilization, the pet treats become safe for human handling.
  • Beverage  bottles and closures: Dairy cartons, standard orange juice bottle tops and cowboy closures for soft drinks all have a high sensitivity to bacteria.  Without proper sterilization and kill steps, this can make the product unsafe or affect the beverage shelf life.

These are just some of the many examples of how the food and cosmetics we all use, stay safe through proper sterilization techniques. As experts, we will advise clients on the correct sterilization technology and  right options for their specific product, along with guidance on regulation requirements.
